Abstract

The objective of this semester long Independent Study was to gain GIS skills and to create maps and imagery of harvests that occurred throughout the 1950s. All of this Domain harvest contracts in this important decade were compiled and organized by year, species, and company/individual. This information was then used to create maps and imagery of the locations on the Domain where these harvests occurred. The most important piece of information collected is the species harvested and the rotation and intensity for each harvest; this will aid our Domain Manager in making proper management prescriptions in the future. This study also set the stage for future work using GIS to bring useful historical data into image form. Having the opportunity to work with ArcGIS and Nicole Nunley directly allowed me to become proficient with the software and to develop documents that will be used by University land managers to better understand the current condition of our forest.
