Abstract
Athletes may decide, consciously or unconsciously, to perform at their peak capabilities the year preceding their free agency—their contract year—to ensure the greatest opportunity of earning the best possible contract. This paper examines this contract year phenomenon for professional quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL). We use data for ten quarterbacks from 2010 to 2019 and employ a fixed effects model. We find that while there isn’t much statistically significant evidence towards the contract year phenomenon, there was an increase in performance in the years prior to the contract year.
